The Arius Eickert Professional Hair
Scissor Repair Class is targeted to the scissor and manicure
repair professional. New and experienced sharpeners may
attend, since each class is tailored to the individual.
The class concentrates on semi and final finishing techniques
of both Bevel Edge (German Style) and Convex Edge (Japanese
Style) style scissors. A major portion of the day is spent
on this, since there are no other facilities in the Americas
who train this crucial portion of repair (we have not heard
of anyone else in Germany or Japan either, but that doesn't
mean they don't exist). The finishing is then tied into
the convexing and honing techniques required for the hollow
ground, convex edged Japanese Style scissors. This includes
training on the machinery used to convex and hone these
tools. Sharpeners are required to bring their own equipment
unless you are purchasing the class package. Most of
the training is on a one to one basis, that is why our classes
are limited in size. Every student is paired with a trainer,
who teaches and critiques the student during the entire
course.

Trainees find this course valuable, since
the marketplace is changing to the Japanese Style of Convex Edged
Professional Hair Scissors. Many sharpening shops can only service
Tailor, Sewing and German Style Bevel Edged Scissors. This cuts
drastically into their service ability and profit margin. A scissor
should feel as good or better than a new scissor after it
has been reconditioned!
The classes are held at the Arius Eickert Corporation Plant 1 Manufacturing
Facilities in Fremont, Ohio. Costs are $1200.00 for the class.
This includes 5 pairs of honed scissors that you can take with you
after practicing on them during the course and sell to cover your
class costs (scissors normally retail for ~$178.00 each). We
require a $250.00 non-refundable deposit with the class reservation,
with the balance due at the beginning of the class day. Trainees
are welcome to stay an extra few hours the next day to "hang around"
the factory and ask additional questions or to continue practicing.
We have had requests by sharpeners who have taken our course to
offer refresher courses. Many want to come back a year later for
an additional day. They want to cover nipper repair or serration
techniques in greater detail, which we do not stress in the first
class. We now offer refresher classes at $500.00 per day.
This does not include the 5 pairs of scissors one gets with the
preliminary class. The refresher students are encouraged to bring
problem scissors with them to analyze and work on.
Due to demand we now offer the Sharpening Class Package for $2,800.00,
which includes the class and all of the mobile equipment a sharpener
needs to repair convex and bevel edge scissors! The following is
included in the Class Package: |
- Finishing and Repair Class
- #3628 Professional Portable Convex Machine
- Brass Bending Block
- Parallel Bar
- Assorted Micron PSA Pads
|
- Green Buffing Compound
- Grease for lubrication on pads
- Screw & Bumper Assortment
- 1200 Grit Ceramic Waterstone
- 3000 Grit Ceramic finish stone
|
|
Individually the components cost $3340.00
through our catalogue. You save $540.00!

Day 1
8:00 - 8:30 Sign up. Class registration costs due. Any machinery
needed and to be purchased for the class is done now.
8:30 - 10:00 Composition of scissors. We give visual and
verbal training on what will be covered for the rest of
the day. It is very important to be able to
visualize the process, before doing the hands on training. |
 |
|
10:00 - 1:00 Blind Finishing Technique. We start with this technique
to get a feel for the setting of the blades. You get used to the
pressures needed to manipulate the blades. You will finish 10 Proline
German Style Bevel Edged Scissors, including pre-finish set, then
final finish. Stress analyzing blade curvature, setting the blades,
getting rid of holes, and the proper tension. We teach two types
of finishing methods during this course. This is the first method
and is excellent for learning bending techniques and getting a feel
for setting the scissors. Scissors are set and finished in the assembled
state.
1:00 - 2:00 Lunch
2:00 - 3:30 Edging and serration techniques for bevel edged scissors.
3:30 - 5:00 Setting Convex Edge scissors. This is the second finishing
method. This is the classic Japanese method of finishing, with the
blades apart, using straight edges. We start by analyzing the type
of work needed. Repair holes in the run, hooks and twist, which
the student will finish and can take home to sell.
Day 2
8:30 - 10:30 Honing the inside hollow of scissors. Analyze ride area.
Modify cut of rides if needed. Rough and final hone applications.
This is possibly the most important part of reconditioning the scissors.
The techniques are simple, but must be learned correctly! Everything
on the scissor can be fine, but if the hone is wrong, the scissor
cut will have problems.
10:30 - 12:30 Pre-convex, pre-polish, sharpen and buff 5 honed scissors.
Here we concentrate on the convexing of the blades. Various techniques
are taught. This is the easiest part of the class and the easiest
to grasp.
12:30 - 1:30 Lunch
1:30 - 3:00 Final Finishing and Controlling the 8315 scissors. Pre-finishing,
final adjusting setting, and final finishing. Rounding tips. Final
buffing applications. Questions & Answers.
3:00 - 5:00 Sales techniques & overcoming customer resistance. |
